Kristian M. Roberts

Kristian M. Roberts is an Australian composer and performer who began musical life performing in noisy rock bands. After studying sound and composition, his musical enjoyment and compositional interests centered on using found sound, field recordings of various environments and the techniques of sculpting music from these captured sounds.

Kristian M. Roberts est un compositeur et musicien australien qui a débuté sa carrière en jouant dans des groupes de rock noise. Après avoir étudié le son et la composition, ses prédilections musicales et compositionnelles l’ont amené à utiliser des sons trouvés, des field recordings issu d’environnements variés, et à sculpter la musique à partir des sons ainsi captés.

Seashell Music / 2011

Seashell Music is a piece in which seashells have been used as compositional tools. The work was conceived by building a library of sounds which exploited the acoustic properties of seashells—placing shells over binaural microphones used to capture urban sounds. My intent has been to manipulate the sounds at the point of capture, filtering these recordings of the constructed world through an artifact of the natural world—examining the musicality of the shell as an instrument.

Seashell Music (musique de coquillage) est une composition qui utilise les coquillages comme instruments. L'œuvre a été élaborée à partir d'une bibliothèque de sons qui exploite les propriétés acoustiques des coquillages — en les plaçant sur des micros binauraux utilisés pour capter les sons urbains. Je me suis efforcé de manipuler les sons au moment même de leur enregistrement, en filtrant ces prises de son du monde construit à travers un artefact du monde naturel — en examinant la musicalité du coquillage en tant qu’instrument.
