Hideki Umezawa

Born in 1986 in Japan. Hideki Umezawa is an artist working with sound and images. He co-runs the project “0℃” that is aiming to collect sounds, objects and images related to snow and ice from all over the world. The project held an exhibition with Akio Suzuki, Jana Winderen, Ryuichi Sakamoto and more. Most recently, Hideki has been working with materials recorded at EMS Stockholm during his residency in 2019 and a François Baschet’s sculpture originally made in 1970, and repaired in 2018. He received the 1st Prize at the Presque Rien Prize in 2015 (France).

Né en 1986 au Japon, l’artiste Hideki Umezawa travaille avec le son et l'image. Il co-dirige le projet « 0℃ » qui vise à collecter des sons, des objets et des images liés à la neige et à la glace du monde entier. Le projet a donné lieu à une exposition avec Akio Suzuki, Jana Winderen, Ryuichi Sakamoto, entre autres. Plus récemment, Hideki a travaillé avec des textures sonores enregistrées à l'EMS de Stockholm au cours d’une résidence en 2019 et avec une sculpture de François Baschet initialement fabriquée en 1970 puis réparée en 2018. Il a remporté le 1er prix Presque Rien en 2015.

Inutile / 2016

In 2015, I visited Okinawa and Henoko-City. Henoko-City has political problems about landfill work for the construction of an American military facility. I went to the sea next to the landfill area to record sounds with a hydrophone, binaural microphones and a handheld recorder. When I faced the sea and the nature that could disappear, I realized anthropocentrism was an issue, and my own helplessness. Based on that recordings, I added electronic fragments generated by analog synthesizer and some instruments in 2015-2016.

En 2015, j'ai visité la région d’Okinawa, et plus précisément la ville de Henoko sujette à des tensions politiques liées aux travaux de remblaiement de terre-pleins pour l’installation d'une base militaire américaine. Je suis allé sur ces terre-pleins en bord de mer pour enregistrer des sons avec un hydrophone, des micros binauraux et un enregistreur portatif. Lorsque je me suis trouvé face à la mer et à cette nature vouée à disparaître, je me suis rendu compte que l'anthropocentrisme était un véritable fléau face auquel j'étais impuissant. Vers 2015-2016 j'ai rajouté à ces enregistrements des fragments électroniques générés par un synthétiseur analogique et d’autres instruments.
