Benjamin Miller

Benjamin Miller approaches acousmatic composition with a particular interest in complex sound textures, rickety rhythms and the relationships between these two polarities. His studio experiments also feed into live electronic projects, both solo and in collaboration with other musicians. He currently lives in Karlsruhe and works as a freelance sound engineer for concerts and installations, which have been presented, among others, at festivals such as Mutek Montreal, TodaysArt, CTM Berlin and Greyarea Festival in San Francisco.

Benjamin Miller approche la composition acousmatique avec un attrait particulier pour les textures sonores complexes, les rythmes instables et les relations entre ces deux pôles. Ses expérimentations en studio nourrissent aussi des projets de live électronique, en solo et en collaboration avec d'autres musiciens. Il vit actuellement à Karlsruhe et travaille comme Ingénieur du son freelance sur des concerts et des installations, lesquels ont été présentés, entre autres, lors de festivals tel que Mutek Montréal, TodaysArt, CTM Berlin et Greyarea Festival à San Francisco.

Zond-9 / 2012

This piece alludes to the space missions of the 1960s. Some were successful, others were disastrous, and contact with some of the probes involved was lost. Maybe these are still drifting around in the cosmos... This is a journey into the unknown, its course is unclear.
Confronted with sound materials, initially powerful and reassuring, sometimes light as if freed from gravity, I am irresistibly led to distort and disrupt them to end up leading them towards more tumultuous and violent spaces.

Cette pièce fait allusion aux missions spatiales des années soixante. Il y a eu des réussites, des désastres, mais aussi des sondes avec lesquelles le contact a été perdu. Peut-être sont-elles encore à la dérive dans le cosmos... C'est une traversée vers l'inconnu, dont le déroulement est incertain.
Me confrontant à des matières sonores, d'abord puissantes et rassurantes, parfois légères comme libérées de la pesanteur, je suis irrésistiblement amené à les tirailler, les perturber, pour les emmener vers des espaces plus tumultueux et violents.
