La mémoire des sons (Sounds Memory) (2000-2001, 24’29)

Premiered during Multiphonies, Studio 104 of the French Radio House in Paris on 10th March 2001.

“From time to time, old sounds come back to haunt my mind like echoes: are they trying to remind me of something? I suspect them to be attention-seeking again. This is what their persistence confirms. They come back on the scene as they were before but in the end, they accept to be changed, disguised, or metamorphosed even, and plunged into a different context that will give birth to new sounds, just as loud. “
Sounds embedded, though not lost in the depths of our memory: where are they? Where do they come from? Where are they going?… Plain to start with, now endearing, from my childhood or adolescence even, these sounds of nature have been ‘spiralling’ inside my ears and finding their own path… Close and distant bells ‘crescendo’ and ‘decrescendo’ taking on the speed and direction of the wind… Pebbles rolling in the riverbed that pushes them… The ‘iron’ clinking of the chain bringing the overflowing water bucket up from the well…
No less present are the artificial sounds, from my recent or past realizations. They have existed and can live again differently. Sounds are not static, and should not be eternally stilted. We can identify them without putting them back in their original context. The sounds of the past contribute to shaping the present.” (B. P.)
